The Magnetic Hill Zoo, located in Moncton, New Brunswick, is committed to safeguarding animal species and raising public awareness of endangered species. The zoo is designed with the well-being of the animals, as well as the safety of the public, in mind. We encourage you to take an active part in your zoo!

Animal Care:

A member of Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums, Magnetic Hill Zoo houses approximately 625 animals, including 77 indigenous and exotic species. Birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and fish find a comfortable and safe home in this 40-acre park.

Safeguarding our Animals:

The staff of the Magnetic Hill Zoo is very concerned with protecting endangered animals. They follow national protection movements closely and participate in diverse repopulation programs for endangered animal species.

The Magnetic Hill Zoo is the provincial headquarters for the Frog Watch program, an initiative of the Canadian Minister of Environment to gather environmental information on Canada’s diverse frog species.

In 2010 and 2011, the Magnetic Hill Zoo worked in partnership with Parks Canada to implement the Piping Plover Recovery Program. Eggs from abandoned nests from two maritime National Parks were brought to the Magnetic Hill Zoo for incubation and hatching. Once the hatchlings reached an appropriate weight, they were transported back to their original National Park for eventual release. These chicks were placed in a large flight pen where they learned, in a natural but protected area, the necessary survival skills like finding food, learning how to fly, and hiding from predators. In the end, five chicks were successfully released into the wild.

The following animals are endangered species:

Andean condor, Amur leopard, Amur tiger, black & white ruffed lemur, Blanding’s turtle, Colobus monkey, Cotton-top tamarin, East African crowned crane, Hyacinth macaw, Mandrill, Przewalski’s horse, Ring-tailed lemur, White-handed gibbon.

Studies/ Publications:

The Magnetic Hill Zoo has enjoyed a long standing relationship with Dalhousie/AC University. Several thesis projects have been conducted at the Zoo over the past 15 years. These projects have included behavioural studies, enrichment opportunities, training protocol, and nutritional trials.

The Magnetic Hill Zoo is a Municipal Zoo that strives to provide a safe educational environment for area residents and tourists alike. We strive to operate a CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums) accredited facility that is focused on recreation, education, conservation, and scientific study.
