Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! is Canada’s most amazing street hockey tournament and outdoor hockey festival, and this summer, it is coming to Halifax!
The event involves closing over 1km of street, and involves the operation of 20 to 50 separate “street rinks” with games running on each rink at all times throughout an entire weekend!
Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! tournaments feature hundreds of teams and thousands of participants and include separate divisions for both genders, all skill levels, and all ages.
Each player in the event receives a commemorative Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! t-shirt and an assortment of neat items from national and local sponsors.
So call your friends, put your team together and prepare yourself – because Hockey Night in Canada’s Play On! will be one of the most memorable events of your summer!!
Play On! was started by a guy who loved playing road hockey with his brothers. He had time to work on the idea since he graduated from one of Canada’s top business schools and couldn’t find a job. Now, several years later, that same school teaches the story of Play On! to all entrepreneurial students, reinforcing a message that anyone can fulfill their dreams if they just never quit.
The first Play On! tournament was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2003 and featured one hundred and twenty-one teams.
Play On! was expanded geographically the following summer and operated nationally across Canada in 2004 and 2005. The program ran in partnership with the NHL and TSN in those years, respectively.
In 2006, and due to organizational complications associated with event planning during the NHL lockout, the program did not operate.
However, in response to the literally thousands of e-mails received from Canadians from coast to coast to coast, the program came back to life. In the fall of 2007, CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada recognized the importance of the Play On! program to the nation and became its title sponsor
